12 Children & Young Adult Titles to Read for Black History Month

Cover art of Little Leaders by Vashti Harrison

We’re focusing on important (and really great) children’s and young adult titles with black narrators. The multi-talented author and activist James Baldwin once said, “When I was going to school, I began to be bugged by the teaching of American history because it seemed that that history had been taught without cognizance of my presence.” We hope this list serves as a jumping-off point for young readers from all backgrounds to explore a more diverse array of books, as well as a reminder that all children deserve to grow up with a broader understanding of history, through accurate and diverse representation.
